After the German invasion on 10 May 1940, the Dutch army was able to hold out for another five days. As an extra means of pressure, the Germans carried out a large-scale bombing raid on Rotterdam on 14 May 1940. Within 15 minutes, a large part of the historic city center was destroyed, 1,150 people were killed, and more than 80,000 people were left homeless. On 15 May, the Netherlands capitulated and was occupied by Germany.
