Erik Mattijssen, Houseware, 2019, gouache on paper
These colourful plastic objects are used to show the beauty of everyday life. In which country did Mattijssen gain his inspiration for this still life?
Mattijssen was inspired by the period when he lived in Kolkata, India. His neighbourhood and the market near his home were known for their plastic housewares. The colourful plastic items were arranged with great care and immediately replaced when something was sold. Even the lucky charms of red peppers and oranges that hung above the wares were made of plastic.
